John Paul II, Pope
To remember this event perpetually
While lifting our heart to the Mother of the Redeemer, who shines forth for all of the Christian faithful as an exemplar of virtue, we willingly take each opportunity to honor throughout the world the sacred dwellings that are made beautiful by the name of the Virgin Mary.
Therefore, when my Venerable Brother William R. Houck, Bishop of Jackson, having listened knowingly to the wishes of his clergy and people, asked that the church dedicated to God in honor of the Blessed Virgin Mary under the title of Our Lady of Sorrows, in the city of Natchez, situated in the Diocese of Jackson, might be raised to the dignity of a Minor Basilica, we willingly assented to this request with a joyful heart.
Therefore, having consulted with the Sacred Congregation of Divine Worship and the Discipline of the Sacraments and with the fullness of our Apostolic power, we have decided that the sacred edifice that we have been speaking about be raised to the titular dignity of a Minor Basilica with all of the rights and privileges attached which legitimately accrue to churches which are known by this title, according to the decree — Detitulo Basilicae Minoris — given on November 9, 1989.
All contrary things notwithstanding. Given at Rome, at St. Peter's, sealed with the ring of the Fisherman, September 8, 1998, the twentieth of Our Pontificate.
